Teutoburg Forest

The Teutoburg Forest is a range of low, forested hills across Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. Until the seventeenth century the ridge was officially called the Osning; it was renamed in 1616 to commemorate the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD, a battle that most likely took place at Kalkriese rather than here. The hills are modest but the walking is extensive, with long marked ridge routes, sandstone outcrops and spa towns strung along the foot of the range.
