Wartburg

The Wartburg is a castle originally built in the Middle Ages, standing at 410 metres in Thuringia on a south-west facing precipice above the town of Eisenach. Its history is unusually dense: it was the home of St Elisabeth of Hungary, the place where Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German, and the site of the Wartburg festival of 1817. It is also the supposed setting of the medieval song contest. The climb from Eisenach is short and steep, through beech woods most of the way.
