Meijendel

Meijendel is a broad, water-rich dune landscape west of Wassenaar and just north of Scheveningen, and with neighbouring Hollands Duin forms the largest unbroken dune area in South Holland, roughly two thousand hectares. The name belonged first to a single dune valley, after the hawthorns that grew thickly there, and later spread to the whole reserve. Behind the marram-grassed sea wall the ground breaks into parabolic dunes, damp hollows, scrub, wet grassland and marsh, with infiltration ponds where the water company Dunea still draws drinking water. The monumental Scheveningen water tower stands at its southern end. It falls within the Natura 2000 area Meijendel & Berkheide.
