Tokyo

Officially the Tokyo Metropolis, the capital and most populous city in Japan, with over 14 million people in the city proper as of 2023 and 33 million across the Greater Tokyo Area, the third-most populous metropolitan area in the world. It lies at the head of Tokyo Bay in the Kantō region, on the central coast of Honshu, and is both the country’s economic centre and the seat of the government and the Emperor. The Metropolitan Government administers the 23 special wards that once made up Tokyo City, the commuter towns and suburbs west of them, and two outlying island chains.
