About Jerez de la Frontera

Jerez de la Frontera is the most populated municipality in the province of Cádiz, on the Campiña de Jerez, a lowland plain crossed by the Guadalete. Winegrowing has long been its main economic driver, and the old spelling of its name, Xerez, is where the English word sherry comes from. Sherry is a fortified wine made mainly from the Palomino grape, in styles from light fino and Manzanilla to darker Amontillado and oloroso, with sweet wines from Pedro Ximénez and Moscatel. It must come from the Sherry Triangle between Jerez, Sanlúcar de Barrameda and El Puerto de Santa María, and it is blended across years in a solera. Its festivals include the Feria de Jerez and Holy Week.
