Juneau

The capital of Alaska, officially the City and Borough of Juneau, set along the Gastineau Channel in the southeast of the state. It was named capital in 1906, when the government of what was then the District of Alaska moved from Sitka as Congress had dictated in 1900. On 1 July 1970 the City of Juneau merged with the City of Douglas and the surrounding Greater Juneau Borough into the consolidated city-borough that exists today – the second-largest municipality in the United States by area, bigger than Rhode Island and Delaware combined. Downtown sits at the base of Mount Juneau, across the channel from Douglas Island. Population at the 2020 census was 32,255.
