Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve

A national park and preserve in Southeast Alaska, west of Juneau. Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the area around Glacier Bay a national monument under the Antiquities Act on 26 February 1925; Jimmy Carter expanded it in 1978, and the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act enlarged it by a further 523,000 acres on 2 December 1980 and created the park and preserve. The preserve itself covers 58,406 acres of public land immediately to the northwest, protecting a portion of the Alsek River with its fish and wildlife habitats while allowing sport hunting. It became part of a binational UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 and a Biosphere Reserve in 1986.
