Achensee

The largest lake in Tyrol, 133 metres at its deepest, called the fjord of the Alps and the Tyrolean Sea; with the Achen valley it divides the Karwendel range to the west from the Brandenberg Alps to the east. The water quality is close to drinking water, with visibility to ten metres, and the temperature rarely rises above twenty degrees. Its size and wind suit windsurfing. Innsbruck bought the lake in 1919 from St. Georgenberg-Fiecht Abbey, which had held it since about 1120, and it has been managed for hydropower since 1924.
