Magome-juku

The forty-third of the sixty-nine stations of the Nakasendō, in what was Mino Province and is now part of Nakatsugawa, Gifu Prefecture, and the last of the eleven stations on the Kisoji through the Kiso Valley. The highway here runs through very mountainous country, and between Magome-juku and Tsumago-juku to the east travellers had to cross an 800-metre pass, the same walk people come for now. The village is old: it appears in Kamakura period records of 1215 as part of the Tōyama Shōen, land Minamoto no Yoritomo had awarded to Kikuhime.
