Croagh Patrick

A pyramid-peaked mountain of 764 metres above Clew Bay, known locally as the Reek. It was the focus of a prehistoric ritual landscape long before it was attached to Saint Patrick, who is said to have fasted forty days on the summit. There has been a church up there since the fifth century; the present one dates from the early twentieth. Thousands of pilgrims climb it every year on Reek Sunday, the last Sunday in July, a custom going back at least to the Middle Ages. It is the fourth-highest mountain in Connacht on the P600 listing.
