Kylemore Abbey

Kylemore Castle was built between 1867 and 1871 as a private house for Mitchell Henry, a London doctor whose family made textiles in Manchester and who bought the land after honeymooning there in the mid-1840s; he later sat as MP for County Galway from 1871 to 1885. James Franklin Fuller designed it, and a hundred men took four years to build it. Benedictine nuns fleeing Belgium in World War I founded the abbey on the grounds in 1920, and since 2022 it has belonged to the English Benedictine Congregation.
