Hill of Tara

Tradition makes this the inauguration place and seat of the High Kings of Ireland, and it appears throughout Irish mythology. The monuments run from the Neolithic to the Iron Age: a passage tomb called the Mound of the Hostages, burial mounds, round enclosures, a ceremonial avenue, and a standing stone believed to be the Lia Fáil, the Stone of Destiny. Twenty ancient monuments are visible and at least three times that many have been found. The name comes from Old Irish Temair, thought to mean a sanctuary or sacred space cut off for ceremony.
