Lake District

England’s highest ground and its deepest water in one place: Scafell Pike at 978 metres, with Helvellyn and Skiddaw behind it, and sixteen major lakes including Windermere (eleven miles long, the longest and largest in England) and Wast Water, 79 metres deep. The national park was designated in 1951, a month after the Peak District, and covers 2,362 square kilometres; it was extended 3 per cent eastward in 2016. Beatrix Potter, Ruskin, Arthur Ransome and the Lake Poets all attached themselves to it. UNESCO listed it in 2017.
