Hvítserkur

A basalt stack fifteen metres high on the eastern shore of the Vatnsnes peninsula, with two holes worn through at the base which make it look like a drinking dragon. Local tradition says it is a troll caught by the sunrise while trying to wreck the monastery at Þingeyrar. In the mid-twentieth century farmers worried the sea would topple it and reinforced the base with concrete. The visitors it now draws have become their own problem: with no marked paths, people have trampled bird nesting sites and seal haul-outs on the gravelbanks alongside.
