Petäjävesi Old Church

A pine log church built between 1763 and 1765, when this was still Sweden, and listed by UNESCO in 1994 as testimony to Nordic wooden church architecture. The crown had allowed the local people a graveyard and a small church at their own expense as early as 1728, because the journey to Jämsä was long, but it took about thirty-five years before building began. Jaakko Klemetinpoika Leppänen planned and built it; his grandson Erkki added the bell tower in 1821. It went out of use in 1879 when a new church was built, which is why the interior survives so completely.
